Keeping the firm small allows individualized attention to the often complicated and demanding situations with which our clients present.  Bregman & Welch generally limits its practice to civil law in the West Michigan area, especially in Ottawa, Muskegon, and Kent County (state courts) and the Western District of Michigan (federal court).  Our practice embraces both trial and appellate work at all levels of the state and federal system.

The focus of our practice is domestic relations or family law.  This is a broad category featuring a number of distinct-yet related-subjects, including: Divorce and separate maintenance, child custody, parenting time, and child support.  It also includes areas related to families, including guardianship/conservatorship and adoption.  We represent clients both during the litigation of the case at trial, and after a judgment is final, when modifications that are allowed must be considered by the Court.  

Representing plaintiffs in civil rights and employment claims (usually in federal court) is the other major practice area of our firm.  Federal civil practice, though similar in many respects to practice in state courts, is a distinct discipline and must be respected as such.  Cases of this kind are technically demanding, and require an instinctive “feel” for this practice to position the client for the best possible outcome.

Representing clients in appeals from the adverse decisions of trial courts in civil matters is the third focus of practice at Bregman & Welch.  Appellate advocacy is not just another court appearance; it has its own analytical, technical, and forensic requirements.  The Michigan Court of Appeals, The Michigan Supreme Court, and federal 6th Circuit Court of Appeals are all venues where the firm has enjoyed success.
